The 'Future’ workpackage will use data from workpackages 1 and 2 to co-design future scenarios with a diverse range of stakeholders for the periods 2030, 2063 and 2100, with these dates chosen as they resonate with assessments for IPBES (The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) and IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), and span the targets of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the African Union’s ‘Agenda 2063: The Africa we want'. AFRI-CAN will produce short, medium and long-term visions of preferable futures, testing and adapting the IPBES Nature Futures Framework to foreground diverse values for nature, for the use of water, energy and food, as well as pathways to achieve these nature-positive visions.
